Malaysia ranked 12th in the world and ranked 4th in Asia as the most biodiverse country. The market value of the herbal industry in Malaysia is projected to reach RM32 billion in 2020, with the annual growth rate between 8%-15%. Thus the growing market of this industry offers an opportunity as wealth creation to the industry players especially for the farmers and young entrepreneurs.
The shift in healthcare towards natural products therapeutic value provides vast opportunities for Malaysia to become a significant global player, given our rich biodiversity. With Malaysia’s rich tropical rainforest, we are home to some 100 species of ferns, 12,500 species of flowering plants and 185,000 species of fauna. A market research report by Kalorama Information - "The US Market for Vitamins, Supplements, and Minerals" - "indicates that 30 million consumers use herbal remedies instead of over-the-counter (OTC) treatments, and an additional 19 million combine herbs and OTC remedies to treat their health problems
Botanical testing methods submitted by industry group.
In an effort to improve the herb industry's reputation for consistency, the Methods Validation Program (MVP) has finalized testing procedures for ginkgo, echinacea, and ginseng. The group's goal is to approve testing methods for 15 herbs by the year 2000. Currently, the US Pharmacopoeia and the American Organization of Associated Chemists (AOAC) are reviewing the group's work for publication in their official compendiums. The MVP is funded by 30 industry members, including raw materials suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, and trade organizations. So far, the MVP has chosen high-tech methods such as HPLC that are also practical and useable. This is the first step in a self-regulatory process that should ultimately cover harvest procedures, extraction, and finished raw materials as well.
